Local Support groups

Support group meetings are held in the Greater Manchester and Cheshire areas. There is the opportunity to talk to other patients and their partners in an informal, friendly atmosphere. Meetings are not all doom and gloom! There is a lighter side to all problems and this often comes out during our meetings. Often there are specialist Urology/Oncology nurses and or speakers at our meetings and most meetings last for up to two hours. Please feel free to just turn up or contact the office on the helpline so that we can expect and welcome you.

PSA Bolton Group, St Luke's Church, Chorley Old Road, Bolton. This is a well established group, which makes new members feel very welcome. We meet on the second Wednesday of each month starting at 2pm.

PSA Group - Cheadle, Cheshire. We meet the second Monday of each month at The Hesketh Tavern, 63 Hulme Hall Road, Cheadle Hulme, Cheshire. Meetings start at 1pm. Lunch can be obtained in the tavern prior to meetings.

Crewe Group. This very active group meets bi-monthly at Leighton Hospital, Crewe. Link to Crewe website

Droylsden support Group

The Droylsden Group meets at 6pm on the first Thursday of each month at the Droylsden Football Club Lounge. This is a well attended informative meeting with lots of opportunity to talk to other prostate cancer patients.

PSA Oldham Group

This group meets on the last Tuesday of each month at 6pm at The Penine Lounge, The bus garage, Walshaw Street (near Mumps Roundabout), Oldham. There are representatives of PSA NoE and nurses from the Oldham Royal Hospital in attendance at each meeting. As a result this meeting attracts many new patients with lots of opportunity to talk to other prostate cancer patients.

PSA Trafford Group. Unfortunately, due to very low attendance, this group is currently suspended. We are actively looking for new members in the Trafford area of south Manchester and would welcome the opportunity to support a new/rejuvinated group. Meetings were held on the second Tuesday of each month at 2pm in the Macmillan Centre, at Trafford General Hospital.

Stoke-on-Trent

Our newest group is the Stoke group, which currently meets at the UHNS (University Hospital of North Staffs - Royal Infirmary Building) in the Betty Wain Room. It is likely that the group will be moving to a new location before the end of the summer 2006. it is normal for a member of PSA NoE and a local Nurse Specialist to be in attendance. As with other groups new faces are always very welcome. the group meets on the third Tuesday of each month at 6pm.

Wirral Support Group

The Wirral group meets on the last Saturday of each month at 10am at the Living Well Centre, Civic Way, Ellesmere Port. It is a very well supported group which typically has a speaker on various aspects of prostate cancer - treatments, diet, patient experiences, etc. If you are about to make your first visit to this group, please check with the PSA North of England office, as the date has been known to change due to availability of speakers.

Future groups

New groups are being established all the time where there is a demand. We are currently working on establishing a number of groups in Cumbria and west Lancashire. If you would like to attend a group in any of these areas, or help to establish them, please contact the office on the number above or the helpline. Similarly, if you feel there is a need in your area and you don't have a group, please contact us and we will endeavour to establish one.

REGIONAL MEETINGS. These meetings are held four times a year at the Christie Hospital, Manchester, usually on a Saturday afternoon. We invite guest speakers with a special interest in prostate cancer and our agendas for these meetings often generate valuable discussion. Link Forthcoming events
